Netball!

Tanja 2 yearss ago:

I have been living in Berlin for some time now and was so disappointed to discover that 'NETBALL' does not exist here? I enjoy playing team sports and have played netball for many years. Does anyone know if there is a 'netball' equivalent in Berlin that i may have overlooked? Also, aside from joining university sporting teams here, how does one get involved in team sports in Berlin?

Hi Tanja,

the universities offer a really big bunch of all kind of sports througout the year. Most courses, especially the team sports, are open to every non-student as well for a small fee. But probably there is no netball. WHATs this??

Go for Google: "unisport berlin"

And in the summer: go to the parks, especially in Volkspark Friedrichshain there are a lot of spots to play team games... just join!

Ha Tanja,

Really good news for you! There is a netball team in Berlin. You mean ‘Korfball’ ne? I am a dutch girl, so when I came to Berlin, I had to play the sport I grew up with haha. I’m playing it at the ‘Hochschulsport Berlin’, the only way to play it in Berlin.. We have training every Friday in the Sporthall near U-Bahnhaltestelle Onkel Toms Hütte. We are around 12 people (sometimes 7, sometimes 17.. depends on the day..), all German, except from me.. In two weeks the Semesterferienkurs starts, so if you are interested, you can come and play with! Or just send me a message, if you want more information (maps@zedat.fu-berlin.de).

Liebe Grüβe

Marianne

Derek-yes, i am from Australia and NETBALL is as big in Australia as volleyball is here!

Dirk- thanks for the information. I have looked into unisport Berlin before but unfortunately couldn't find netball. In answer to your question, netball is similar to basketball with regard to the fact that you have a court, a hoop at each end and the aim of the game is to get the ball into the hoop. The differences to basketball include: 7 players (usually just women) instead of 5 players per side, a court divided into thirds instead of halves, each player has different positions and only 4 players are allowed into the goal circle and only 2 of those are allowed to shoot whereas everyone can shoot in basketball and the BIG difference, with netball, when you are passed the ball, you can't move with it and you can't bounce it, but rather have to pass it on to your team mate. Summer sports in the parks sound fantastic though...just need to be patient and wait for all of the snow to melt!

Think i may check out 'Korfball' as it seems similar to netball. Thanks again Marianne,

Tanja
