Origin and History

Bulgarian is a South Slavic language and was the first Slavic language to be written down, using the Glagolitic and later the Cyrillic alphabet. Old Church Slavonic, the first literary Slavic language, was based on the dialect spoken near Thessaloniki by Saints Cyril and Methodius. Modern Bulgarian has lost the case system found in other Slavic languages.
